Field Application Scientist

Department: Commercial

POSITION: Field Application Scientist

REPORTS TO:  VP of Sales and Marketing

DEPARTMENT: Commercial

STATUS: Exempt

TwinStrand is seeking an exceptional Field Application Scientist to join our growing field-based team to provide both on-site and remote support for our ultra-sensitive Duplex Sequencing™ technology. You will oversee and own the end-to-end customer technical experience by meeting with customers alongside the Commercial Development team, when further scientific depth is required, and by directly working closely with customers.

At TwinStrand our core philosophy is that science comes first. As a member of this vital and respected team, you will be responsible for moving customers quickly and efficiently through the usage of TwinStrand’s products and ensuring their success at all levels. You will not only help customers learn, use and troubleshoot our products, but will also assist, when appropriate, in designing experimental strategies, suggesting controls, directing to relevant published literature and proactively heading off challenges. Your success will be the positive experience and scientific successes of our customers and partners.

You will become an expert ambassador for our technology through significant hands-on training from our R&D and computational biology teams. Co-travel with our scientific leadership and early mentoring will facilitate your rapid transition to a role with a high degree of independence. You will have support from our internal scientists but will be afforded significant autonomy to develop your own approaches and style for presentations, training and technology evaluations with customers. You will be expected to carry out scientific training of our sales team and to be a mentor to future Field Application Scientists.

Through close customer relationships you will also serve as the scientific eyes and ears of the company. You will form a crucial link between the market and our R&D and marketing teams. You will bring back experiences, challenges, customer input and your own suggestions to help TwinStrand continually innovate and expand our product portfolio and training resources.

  • Provide broad scientific and technical support of TwinStrand’s biochemistry and software solutions through virtual and on-site visits, presentations and workshops in the field.
  • Be a technical expert on TwinStrand’s application areas and provide scientific presentations, pre-sales product demonstrations and scientific seminars to showcase the value and performance of TwinStrand technologies.
  • Train and support new customers on technical aspects of the full workflow.
  • Be available as a resource for quick troubleshooting.
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of individual customers’ needs through strong scientific working relationships, extending from inception to publication.
  • Provide systematic feedback on products and customer challenges and needs to product management and R&D teams and ideas for improvements.

  • Ph.D. or MS in biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology or genetics; BA/BS with at least 5 years of relevant experience considered.
  • 5 years of lab experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, genomics or genetics, including evidence of scientific achievement via publications, abstracts or patents.
  • 3 years of hands-on experience with NGS workflows and data analysis software.
  • Excellent communication skills, including being able to pick up, synthesize and explain complex scientific principles in both expert and simple terms, as dictated by audience.
  • Evidence of exceptional attention to detail, logic and systematic thinking that breaks down problems into manageable components when confronted with new challenges.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and preparing independent presentation material, but also being able to teach on-the-fly in front of a white board.
  • Curious, high-energy personality and demonstrated examples of being a lifelong learner.
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics with the aptitude to interact credibly with both wet-lab and bioinformatics scientists.
  • Experience troubleshooting NGS protocols and interpreting the output of NGS assays; including a strong understanding in common sequencer failure modes, NGS bioinformatics workflows, NGS data types, and alignment/variant interpretation.
  • Familiarity with clinical and translational research in oncology, genetics and other fields; experience interacting with physician-scientists preferred.
  • Expertise beyond basic working knowledge in at least a core application area within genomics (such as: oncology, genetic toxicology, cellular therapies, CRISPR, etc.)
  • Commercial customer facing experience is preferred but is not essential.

  • This field-based position will require the ability to travel both domestically and internationally up to 50% of the time (not during COVID), inclusive of conferences.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working with a computer.
  • Field laboratory work with biological specimens.

  • Have a proven ability to be flexible, creative, diplomatic and work in a fast-paced, high- growth environment with multiple teams and ambitious timelines.
  • Have a deep understanding of Next Generation Sequencing, including a mastery of the molecular biology and biochemistry of all steps within the NGS workflow.
  • Demonstrate an exceptional aptitude for understanding, communicating and teaching scientific concepts, applications and methods with tact and patience.
  • Possess an appropriate balance of deep curiosity and efficient, scientifically rooted pragmatism to rapidly triage challenges, identify core issues and identify practical solutions.
  • Be a robust self-starter: proactive about identifying and solving problems, always eager to find things that can be improved with tools and systems.
  • Have prior experience with high-sensitivity genetic techniques such as droplet digital PCR or error-corrected NGS.
  • Genuinely celebrate the achievements of customers and colleagues and take pride in a culture of setting others up for success.

  • A mission to be proud of. You will help to provide access to a technology with unprecedented sensitivity that makes it possible to solve previously unsolvable scientific problems in basic research and translational medicine, with direct and immediate benefits to human health.
  • Beautiful new waterfront facility overlooking Puget Sound, centrally located in downtown Seattle with nearby parks, food trucks, and a diversity of transportation options.
  • Competitive compensation and equity incentive plan.
  • Comprehensive benefits: medical, dental and vision benefits for employees and dependents, sponsored life, short and long-term disability insurance, and 401(k) retirement savings plan.
  • Subsidized transportation program: parking, bus, ferry, rideshare and more.
  • Onsite gym, showers, bike storage.
  • Social events, weekly happy hours, well-stocked kitchen.
  • Recognition that outside life exists and is important, that flexibility is needed for family and that work can often be effectively carried out remotely.
