POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking a qualified individual for the position of Bioinformatics Engineer. As a Bioinformatics Engineer, you will work within a team of bioinformatics scientists and software engineers to play a pivotal role in solving important problems in cancer detection & monitoring through genomics tool & pipeline development & deployment.

As a part of the Computational Biology Department you will work on projects of novel method development in NGS data analysis, tool/pipeline development, process automation, and deploying distributed high-throughput genomics pipelines on cloud environments. Most of your work will focus on taking our Duplex Sequencing technology to higher levels of accuracy, accessibility, efficiency and utility across many scientific fields including early disease detection, disease monitoring, mixture deconvolution, and forensics. A process-oriented individual with exceptional attention to detail will excel in the role of Bioinformatics Engineer. Familiarity with agile programming methods such as test-driven development, collaborative programming, version control flow, and code quality standards is ideal, however, we are eager to support efforts to round out any skills that have not been previously acquired! You are the ideal Bioinformatics Engineer if you love working within a high-performance team, in a collaborative environment, to deliver high-quality solutions of bioinformatics processing. We need your expertise in bringing our Duplex Sequencing technology to more researchers and clinicians so we can continue to pioneer solutions for human health improvement through scientific discovery.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and deploy accurate, maintainable, and well-architected core R&D and production software for high-throughput NGS data processing (tools and pipelines) in cloud environments
  • Define requirements for new computational methods and software based on the needs of our internal R&D group, external customers, and independent research partners
  • Work collaboratively within a development team to continuously improve our existing methods and processes as well as invent and discover new ways to analyze and produce novel scientific results from Duplex Sequencing datasets
  • Conduct system level testing, automation tests, and other methods to continuously improve our production and research software
  • Architect and engineer processes that relate to bioinformatics data processing, laboratory information management, and large-scale dataset curation and analysis

EXPERIENCE AND CAPABILITIES

  • B.S. in computer science, engineering, or related field. 3-5+ years of experience
  • Ability to work well within a team, in a fast-paced environment
  • Expert ability in at least one programming language, and proficiency in others
  • Experience in developing genomics pipelines and containerizing workflows
  • Familiarity with high-throughput sequencing libraries and short-read sequencing
  • Familiarity with common bioinformatics file formats such as BAM/SAM and VCF
  • High competency with cloud development and deployment
  • High competency with version control systems like Git
  • Effective communication skills.

OUTSTANDING CANDIDATES WILL

  • Have an M.Sc. or Ph.D. in computer science, engineering, or related field
  • Have experience with Amazon Web Services like Batch, EC2, and S3
  • Have experience with DevOps, analytics, and big data systems
  • Have previous biotechnology experience, startup company a bonus

 

PHYSICAL AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times and maintain a home office.
  • Ability to travel nationally up to 10% of time for conferences and headquarters visits.
