Sample Manager

REPORTS TO: Senior Director of Assay Development

DEPARTMENT: Research & Development

STATUS: Exempt


TwinStrand Biosciences is seeking a Sample Manager in the Research and Development Department.  The Sample Manager will be responsible for all sample chain of custody tasks as well as designing and implementing process optimization.

As a member of the Research and Development Department, the Sample Manager will interact with external clients and across internal departments to ensure sample integrity and tracking in exciting and impactful research and service projects.

  • Work cross-functionally across departments to ensure sample chain of custody is documented.
  • Follow all safety and company policies and procedures.
  • Manage incoming sample shipments from external collaborators, including direct communication, shipping coordination, providing shipping instructions and guidance, decontamination, accessioning and tracking sample chain of custody.
  • Manage outgoing sample shipments to external collaborators and vendors; assist with sample manifest, shipment coordination, packing slips, shipment tracking, and confirm sample receipt.
  • Maintain sample tracking records using various systems including, but not limited to LIMS, G-sheets, MS word, MS Excel.
  • Perform DNA extraction and sample QC.
  • Assist with sample tracking database design and implementation as needed.
  • Work with the Assay Development, Custom Applications and CLIA Laboratory teams to update and log sample tracking, create and improve procedures, and assist in other laboratory activities as needed.
  • Assist the Computational Biology team as needed with LIMS activities and tracking sample metadata.
  • Participate in Quality, R&D and other meetings and presentations.
  • Collaborate and work with the Quality Assurance Team to address CAPA.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry or related field.
  • At least 5 years of laboratory experience. At least 2 years of sample management and tracking is preferred.
  • Immaculate documentation practices.
  • Proficient in Microsoft and Google applications such as Excel, Word, Power Point, G-Drive is required.
  • Experience in working with LIMS and/or similar systems/databases.
  • Able to communicate and interact efficiently with internal stakeholders and external clients.
  • Professional inter-personal skills and excellent oral/written communication. Must be comfortable presenting in front of internal and external audiences.
  • Familiar with aseptic techniques, sample accessioning and sample handling.
  • Experience in maintaining sample databases.
  • Ability to comply and follow policies and procedures.


  • Willingness to work with biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms.
  • Travel will be less than 5% or as needed for external audit and sample tracking.
  • Ability to work in a laboratory setting and perform repetitive manual tasks.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.


  • Experience in Biobanking.
  • 2 or more years working in a CLIA or other regulated environment.
  • Assisted in design and implementation of LIMS.
  • Familiar with AGILE and project management concepts.
  • Experience in customer service and communication.
