Field Application Scientist - Midwest

Department: Commercial

POSITION: Field Application Scientist - Midwest

REPORTS TO: Manager - Field Application Scientists

DEPARTMENT: Commercial

STATUS: Exempt

TwinStrand is seeking a Field Application Scientist in the Midwestern United States to join our field-based commercial team to provide on-site and remote support for our ultra-sensitive Duplex Sequencing™ technology. In this role you will manage the end-to-end technical experience by meeting and working directly with customers in conjunction with the Commercial Development team.

The core philosophy at TwinStrand Biosciences is that science comes first. As a member of the Field Applications Team, you will be responsible for quickly and efficiently facilitating customer usage and adoption of TwinStrand’s product and ensuring their success at all levels. You will not only help customers learn, use and troubleshoot our products, but will also assist in designing experimental strategies to enable their continued scientific accomplishments. Your overall success in this role will be identified by the positive experiences and scientific successes of our customers and partners.

The TwinStrand Field Application Scientist will be a scientific expert and ambassador for our technology. Significant hands-on training, mentorship and co-travel with our R&D, computational biology and scientific leadership teams will facilitate your rapid transition into a role that necessitates a high degree of independence. You will have support from our internal scientists but will also be afforded significant autonomy to develop your own approaches and style for presentations, training and technology evaluations with customers. Additionally, you will be expected to lead and participate in the continued scientific training of our sales team, as well as be a mentor to future Field Application Scientists.

Through close customer relationships you will also serve as the scientific eyes and ears of the company, acting as a scientific liaison between customers and TwinStrand’s Product, Marketing and R&D Teams. You will bring back experiences, challenges, voice-of-customer and your own suggestions to help TwinStrand continually innovate and expand our product portfolio, resources, training materials and general market comprehension.

  • Provide broad scientific and technical support of TwinStrand’s biochemistry and software solutions through virtual and on-site visits, presentations and workshops.
  • Be the technical expert on TwinStrand’s application areas and provide scientific presentations, pre-sales product demonstrations and scientific seminars to showcase the value and performance of TwinStrand technologies.
  • Train and support new customers on technical aspects of the full Duplex Sequencing™ workflow.
  • Be available as a resource for timely post-sales technical support.
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of individual customer needs through strong scientific working relationships, extending from inception through publication.
  • Provide systematic and timely voice-of-customer feedback to Product Management and R&D teams; including wants, needs, challenges and ideas for improvements.

  • BA/BS, MS or Ph.D. in biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology or genetics with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated lab experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, genomics or genetics, including evidence of scientific achievement via publications, abstracts or patents.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with NGS library construction workflows and data analysis software.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to interpret and explain complex scientific principles in both expert and simple terms as necessitated by the audience.
  • Evidence of exceptional attention to detail, logic and systematic thinking in order to break down complex problems into manageable components.
  • Extremely comfortable with public speaking and preparing independent presentation material, but also capable of teaching on-the-fly in front of a white board.
  • Curious, high-energy personality with demonstrated examples of being a lifelong learner.
  • Knowledgeable in bioinformatics with the aptitude to interact credibly with both wet-lab and bioinformatics scientists.
  • Experience with troubleshooting NGS protocols and interpreting the output of NGS assays, including a strong understanding of common sequencer failure modes, NGS bioinformatics workflows, NGS data types, and alignment/variant interpretation.
  • Familiarity with clinical and translational research in oncology, inherited genetics and other fields, particularly interacting with physician-scientists.
  • Familiarity with core genomic application areas such as oncology, genetic toxicology, cellular therapies, CRISPR, etc. a plus.
  • Commercial customer facing experience is highly preferred but not essential.

  • This field-based position will require the ability to travel both domestically and internationally up to 50% of the time (not during COVID), inclusive of conferences.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working with a computer.
  • Field laboratory work with biological specimens.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals and biological materials when visiting customer sites.
  • Ability to lift 15 pounds at times.

  • Have a proven ability to be flexible, creative, diplomatic and work in a fast-paced, high- growth environment with multiple teams and ambitious timelines.
  • Have a deep understanding of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), including a mastery of the molecular biology and biochemistry of all steps within the NGS workflow.
  • Demonstrate an exceptional aptitude for understanding, communicating and teaching complex scientific concepts, applications and methods with tact and patience.
  • Possess an appropriate balance of deep curiosity and efficient, scientifically rooted pragmatism to rapidly triage challenges, identify core issues and identify practical solutions.
  • Be a self-starter and self-motivator: proactive about identifying and solving problems, and always eager to find things that can be improved with tools and systems.
  • Have prior experience with high-sensitivity genetic techniques such as droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) and/or error-corrected NGS.
  • Genuinely celebrate the achievements of customers and colleagues and take pride in a culture of setting others up for success.

  • A mission to be proud of. You will help to provide access to a technology with unprecedented sensitivity that makes it possible to solve previously unsolvable scientific problems in basic research and translational medicine, with direct and immediate benefits to human health.
  • Competitive compensation and equity incentive plan.
  • Comprehensive benefits: medical, dental and vision benefits for employees and dependents, sponsored life, short and long-term disability insurance, and 401(k) retirement savings plan.
